We have all felt it. The awkward silence. The uncomfortable long pause in a conversation. Some of us can bear it, but most of us blurt something out to fill the void… only to miss an opportunity.
What was on her mind?
What was she thinking, feeling?
What was going on inside of her?
She might have shared her thoughts if only she had a moment of silence to think.
Silence is Golden
This ancient proverb expresses that saying nothing is often preferable to speaking.
A wise poet reflecting on this phrase once wrote, “Silence is the element in which great things fashion themselves together; that at length they may emerge, full-formed and majestic, into the daylight of Life”
Next time you disciple, mentor or coach a woman, or talk with your child, husband or friend, give this a try:
1. Ask a question. Pause. Give a moment of silence for thinking. Then, listen to her words flow.
2. When she stops talking, pause again. Resist the urge to speak. She might have something else to say that only some silence could bring forth.
Silence is Golden…
Try practicing silence today.
Then wait and watch for the gold.
Everyone should be quick to listen and slow to speak. James 1:19
